Waberski and Sherwood win at Snetterton as Marzorati claims championship lead

Jarrod Waberski and Jack Sherwood were the Sunday winners at Snetterton in the GB4 Championship, as two dramatic races turned the championship battle on its head. A pair of second place finishes for Max Marzorati means Hillspeed’s British contender leaves Snetterton with a nine point lead in the standings, after an up and down day for previous championship leader Nikolas Taylor. Race two Waberski started second on the grid, but passed pole sitter Taylor at Riches on the first lap and led every lap from there, but there was plenty of drama behind him. Taylor had slotted into second but was challenged by Waberski’s teammate Tom Mills on the second lap, the pair banging wheels as Mills moved past exiting Riches. Taylor’s pace was hit for a while, but he recovered in the second half of the contest and fought back to reclaim the position, only for another collision to send Taylor off into the barriers at Wilson and leaving Mills without his front wing. The drama allowed Waberski to escape seven seconds up the road, while on an enthralling final lap, Marzorati went from fifth to second as the field fought to pass the hobbled Mills, with Sherwood claiming third, the duo finishing the race side by side in a near photo finish.  Megan Gilkes was another to pass Mills, who dropped to fifth in the classification ahead of Graham Brunton Racing’s Chloe Grant.  Race three The final race saw Sherwood surge from fourth on the grid into the lead on the first lap, while Marzorati climbed from sixth to second in the same time.  Initially it looked like a tight scrap would develop between the two as the Hillspeed driver carved into Sherwood’s lead. But as the race approached its halfway stage, the Elite Motorsport contender was able to stretch his legs to claim his debut victory in single-seaters, and confirm his credentials as a title contender – the 16-year-old has now finished on the podium across the last five races.   Marzorati’s second place means he extended his newly-earned championship lead, with Mills making amends for race two by claiming a first podium since Oulton Park to reignite his season.  Waberski ended his weekend with fourth place after a battle with his teammate, ahead of Taylor who climbed from ninth on the grid to fifth, with Grant sixth again for Graham Brunton Racing. Race two winner Waberski said: “I’m really happy, I knew we had the pace all weekend, we’ve been really on it. Yesterday with the P2 was also another good result, and I knew if I got a good start and got ahead I could maintain the gap and pull away. I managed to get a really good start at the beginning and then pulled away, and managed the gap towards the end.” Race three winner Sherwood said: “We got a good start and then I did Chloe around the outside. I tried to get my head down and pull a gap, in case anything happened. It’s been a good weekend in general but maybe a few areas like in race two where we could have made a few positions. But it’s been a good weekend for us and the team has put out a mega car. I’m looking forward now going to Silverstone." GB4 Championship, partnered by the BRDC, Snetterton race two top-six: 1.
