During the first round of the Formula 3 Regional Eurocup 3, the young Moroccan driver Suleiman Zanfari made a brilliant move by mounting the podium of Race 1 of the Spa-Francorchamps meeting. This performance, hailed by his peers, gives him a boost of confidence at the start of an important season. He is currently 4th in the standings of this promising new series.
For Suleiman, this year the long road to Formula 1 is through the Formula 3 Regional Eurocup 3, a new international championship with a very interesting programme of eight events. "Eurocup 3 is an important step for me before I move on to FIA F3," explains Suleiman. "The car is powerful and fast and fun to drive. In addition, the overall level of the competitors will allow me to progress while familiarising myself with the major European circuits used by the higher categories. I am lucky to be part of the Campos Racing team managed by Andreu Romera and to benefit from the advice of former F1 driver Vitantonio Liuzzi.”
All the Eurocup 3 drivers were delighted to discover the new car during pre-season testing at the Valencia circuit. The first test took place a few weeks later in Belgium on the long track of Spa-Francorchamps. Qualifying in 11th position, Suleiman faced the usual rain in the region in Race 1. The limited grip allowed him to demonstrate his sense of balance in a superb recovery to 3rd place.
Starting a season with a podium is a great start. Suleiman will continue to work with his coach Gabriel Vieira to improve his fitness. This is another challenge for the young Moroccan who never lacks determination. His current 4th position in the Formula 3 Regional Eurocup 3 ranking is the best encouragement.
The next event is scheduled for the end of May on the Motorland circuit in Spain.
