MP Motorsport's Formula 2 and 3 teams travelled to Monza this weekend as support series of the Formula 1 circus. For the Formula 3 team this was the season finale, which could not have gone better for the team from the Netherlands. The qualifying session on Friday was a tricky one, due to numerous red flags it was decided that the session would not be finished with 10 minutes to go. As a result, Jonny Edgar qualified fourth, which was his best result this season. Mari Boya and Franco Colapinto finished in 15th and 16th positions, but disqualifications promoted them to P11 and P12.
This meant that Colapinto was allowed to start from pole position in the first race on Saturday, with Mari Boya alongside him. Both had a good start but Boya took the lead in the race. For the Englishman Edgar, the race did not last long, as Aron drove into his side at the first corner, taking him out straight away. Boya and Colapinto swapped positions almost every lap but in the end, it was Franco Colapinto who won the race. Boya finished third, taking his first Formula 3 podium.
On Sunday, it only got better as Jonny Edgar took his first win in Formula 3. With this, MP Motorsport won both races at Monza and all three drivers were on the podium. Franco Colapinto went into Sunday's race second in the championship, but unfortunately, he was tapped out on the opening lap and could not defend this position. As a result, Colapinto finished third in the Drivers' Championship, and good results in the final weekend saw the team jump from fifth to third position in the Team’s championship.
The Formula 2 team drove its penultimate round of the championship, as they will join Formula 1 in Abu Dhabi for the final round. In a chaotic qualifying session with little space and many cars, Dennis Hauger qualified 11th and Jehan Daruvala 16th. During the Sprint Race on Saturday, overtaking was difficult and the drivers finished P12 and P18. The main race on Sunday was much better, staying out of the chaos during a race with many safety cars and having a good strategy with pit stops, the team finished with double points. Hauger finished 5th, and his teammate Daruvala 7th.
The Formula 3 team will now start focusing on next season, with some post-season testing scheduled in the coming months. Formula 2 has a two-month break and will travel to the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi on the last weekend of November.
