The FIA has introduced the FIA Standard 8877-2022 Protective Clothing for Karting Competitors, marking a significant advancement in karting protective garments, enhancing safety performance and design requirements and, for the first time, introduces these requirements also for karting gloves and karting shoes.
The FIA Standard 8877-2022 has been developed following an analysis of karting accidents and injuries in recent years. This initiated a research program that shaped the standard's design and safety performance requirements. The project was supported by the FIA Industry Group, a coalition of manufacturers reporting to the FIA Technical and Safety Department, who contributed materials, products, and expertise. Their collaboration was crucial in meeting the standard’s ambitious safety goals and leveraging industry knowledge effectively.
Effective January 1, 2025, all participants in FIA Championships, Cups and Trophies must use karting shoes and karting gloves approved according to this FIA Standard. This requirement extends to all karting competitions listed on the international sporting calendar, ensuring a consistent safety level across karting.
For Karting Overalls, until the end of 2029, karting competitors will have the option to choose between the CIK-FIA overalls, very well-know across the karting world and the new Karting Overalls approved to FIA Standard 8877-2022, which will be compulsory starting 2030.
The implementation of FIA Standard 8877-2022 represents a pivotal step in karting safety, underscoring the FIA's dedication to the well-being of karting competitors worldwide.
