FIA Karting best-of 2019: Return of training to the Academy Trophy with Formula Medicine

Originally, the FIA Karting Academy Trophy included an educational part that was evaluated on interactive kiosks before each Competition.  In 2019, youth training made a comeback through an effective collaboration with Formula Medicine. Formula Medicine is a Driver training organisation created more than 30 years ago by Dr. Riccardo Ceccarelli. It is characterised by extraordinary experience and a scientific approach based on solid medical bases and constant evolution. Its area of expertise ranges from karting to Formula 1, having worked with more than 1,500 drivers, around 200 each year.

"We are used to working individually or in a small group. So we imagined a different operation for the 51 Drivers of the Academy. We limited the amount of presentations to the full group to focus on the smaller workshops with three 45-minute sessions per Competition. This allowed us to address various topics such as nutrition, mental preparation and reflexes and physical preparation during various activities during which the active participation of the young people was constantly needed.

We were pleasantly surprised by their overall interest. The young people immediately realised that the topics could help them become true sportsmen and that their performances behind the wheel would be improved. Drivers generally do not realise that they compete in a demanding sport and that full preparation is essential to progress.

We can draw a very positive assessment of this first experience. Of course, these young people have a long way to go on their own, but I am sure we have opened the minds of most to an area they did not have any experience of. That was our main goal and we reached it. I want to thank the FIA for giving us this opportunity."
