The year 2020 is making history – in the German Kart Championship too. Right after the kick-off to the season, the organizers had to react to changes in the racing calendar and are now going to hold the second event of the highest German kart racing series on the Erftlandring in Kerpen too. This time, the German Electric Kart Championship (DEKM) will happen too.
Just three weeks after the kick-off to the German Kart Championship with its four grade series DKM, DJKM, DSKM and DSKC, things are now going to continue in Kerpen. While the first event was a red-hot battle, now the colder and possibly wetter conditions could cause a change in the power balance. With 114 participants, the interest in the DKM is still strong despite the high impassibility.
Who will win the half-time titles?
Kas Haverkoort (DKM), Kris Haanen (DJKM), Jorrit Pex (DSKM) and Julian Müller (DSKC) are currently leading the championships and will now be the hunted drivers at the second race in Kerpen. None of them can be too sure of their success. The pursuers already stayed really close at the kick-off and will now try to turn things around before half-time. Especially the changing weather conditions could put new faces at the front of the field.
For the first time, the drivers of the German Electric Kart Championship (DEKM) will also be there. Last year, BRP Rotax already presented a new electric kart under the title “Project E20” and promises a better performance, less weight and longer driving times. First test drives confirmed this and considerably shortened lap times. Luca Wlömer from Berlin will participate for the third time. After narrowly missing the title in 2018 and 2019, he is now hoping for a triumph. Joel Mesch is facing a double burden: In addition to the races of the DEKM, he is also participating in the DKM and was among the favorites for victory at the kick-off. Jasmin Stein is going to be the only woman participating in the DEKM this season.
Participants voted on driving direction
Next to its long-standing tradition, the 1.107m long Erftlandring has another specialty: As one of a few tracks, it’s got a permit for both driving directions. The Kart-Club Kerpen e.V. and the organizers therefore made the suggestion to drive the second event in the opposite direction. In the end, the participants made the decision by voting on it and the majority voted for the known direction, counter-clockwise.
Organizers stay true to hygiene- and security-concept
After the successful kick-off in Kerpen and the adherence to the hygiene- and security-concept by everyone involved, the Kart-Club Kerpen e.V. as well as the DMSB are sticking with the regulations. Again, every person on the premises is going to receive a personal transponder, which has to be carried at all times. The system enables an easy tracking of contacts and is an innovative solution to securely carry out racing events. Everyone on location also has to wear a mask. Due to a limitation on the number of people allowed, there will unfortunately be no spectators again.

No one has to live without the DKM though. As usual, an extensive live-stream will provide the entire racing action on Saturday and Sunday. Whether you’re on the road, doing sports or are at home – the events in Kerpen can be followed from everywhere on www.kart-dm.de. On Saturday, the broadcast is going to start at 10 am, on Sunday things will already start at 9:15. The program will be rounded off by a broad supply on the social media channels of the DKM.
