Tire rule changes at Xtream Rock Island Grand Prix

ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS — The Xtream Rock Island Grand Prix, the world’s largest and most prestigious karting street race, will run for the 29th time this August 31-September 1. In response to a number of racers, an adjustment has been made to the race’s spec tire rules.

Hoosier tires will remain the preferred spec tire for the event. But a number of 2 cycle drivers said they had not raced on the tires before and did not have Hoosier tires to practice on, so specific MG tires have been approved as a spec tire in those classes.

*Margay Ignite Shootout Senior 1 & 2 and Ignite Masters will continue to run on Hoosier RB80 4.5/7.10. These tires do NOT need to be purchased from Rock Island.

*Vintage Open, Mac and Yamaha classes will continue to run on Open tires. These tires do not need to be purchased from Rock Island. All other tires must be purchased through RIGP registration so that the race can control illegal tire prep.

*All Briggs 206 classes including Junior, Light, Medium, Heavy, Masters and King of The Rock will continue to run on Hoosier R60B 4.5/7,10-5 or 4.5/60.5 tires.

*The 100cc Senior class, for KA100, VLR and Yamaha Pipe engines, and 100cc King of The Rock, can run on either Hoosier R60B 4.5/7.10-5 or 4.5/60.5 OR MG Reds (SH2) 4.6/7.10. The same is true for the Yamaha KT-100 Can Heavy class.

*Open Shifter, Rok/Honda Shifter, Shifter Masters, and King of The Streets will be able to run either Hoosier R55 4.5/7.10-5 OR MG Yellow (SM2) 4.6/7.10.

All tires that must be purchased from Rock Island will be available through registration at a cost of $240 per set and will be distributed race weekend on Friday evening (and early Saturday if needed). A very limited number of tire sets will be available on race weekend, so drivers are encouraged to buy tires through advance registration. Kartsport North America will give one free set of MG tires to each winner if on MG tires.

Watch the Grand Prix’s social media pages for details on Rules and Registration. Sponsor inquiries and race questions can be sent to rockislandgrandprix@gmail.com. A room block for racers has been set up at the Holiday Inn in Rock Island.
