Statement: Australian Kart Championship Round Three

Firstly, thank you to everyone who competed and officiated at Round 2 of the 2020 SP Tools Australian Kart Championship presented by Castrol EDGE at the Newcastle Kart Racing Club last weekend.

After having Club and State Championship level back across the majority of the country for some time, it was great to have National Championship level competition running again in these very challenging times.

Our priority since we announced the revised event dates in August has been to try and complete a three Round Championship.

The final event has been scheduled for the Ipswich Kart Club in Queensland on December 4-6 – subject to border restrictions allowing appropriate access into Queensland for competitors. This means that we are currently in the hands of the Queensland Government which is still maintaining closed borders to all of Victoria and Sydney. The signs are promising for either a full or partial lifting on the Queensland border restrictions prior to our scheduled event.

The latest that we can make a call on this is early next week. Karting Australia is continuing to monitor the restrictions across the country closely and are considering the best possible options for the sport of karting and the overall Championship.

Our options are as follows:

Decide to proceed with the event at Ipswich on December 4-6 in the hope and anticipation that the Queensland Government removes the border closures to people who reside in or have been in Greater Sydney or Victoria during the 14 days prior to the scheduled date of the event; or

Relocate the event on the same dates to another Karting Australia licenced track and affiliated Club where we have surety of access for competitors and officials; or

Call an end to the 2020 Championship with two rounds competed and then turn our focus to 2021.

Please be assured that as soon as we know and have made a decision, you will all be advised.

Thanks for your understanding.
