Glume brothers Markus and Charly show great speed at Karting Genk; victory for Markus!

GENK - Two brothers from the town of Nalinnes racing in the same karting category, and both are very fast: Charly and Markus Glume are a force to be reckoned with in the GK4 Kart Series. Markus (17) won the second round of the Dutch-Belgian Championship in the IAME X30 Senior category, while his older brother Charly (15) finished seventh.

"It feels very good. I didn't expect it", Markus said with a grin. Although he knew that his speed on the Genk track last weekend was very good. "I took pole position in qualifying. Then I was first in the first race, fourth in the second and won the final. The speed was great. It's my second win in the Senior category. Before that, I won twice in the Junior category.”

Naturally, he was delighted with his victory. Especially as he's a relative newcomer to the senior category this season. The Eurokarting driver said that he had noticed the difference between the Juniors and the Seniors. "First of all, the seniors use different tyres than the juniors. The braking is also different." Nevertheless, he won his debut race in this go-karting class in the final GK4 race of last season!

His brother Charly had to fight hard for seventh place. "Qualifying didn't go well. That's why I started P18 in the first race", he explained. He finished the race at P11. The second race went much better, resulting in a well-deserved P6.

Charly: "Then I started the final in P8. I had a very good start and quickly moved up to P5. After a lot of fighting, I lost two positions and had to settle for P7." Although this was not necessarily the result he wanted, he had noticed that he had a good pace. "I think the podium is possible this season. I have had a good start in every race."

Their father Yorick beamed with pride. With both Charly and Markus now having won a race in the Senior category, the ideal scenario of a 1-2 finish for his sons could one day become a reality. "Yes, maybe. I'm waiting for it."

The brothers first tried karting at the tender ages of 6 and 8. They went to the indoor track at JMK Karting in Floreffe. But as fate would have it, they ended up racing dirt bikes. Yorick: "It didn't go as well as we wanted. There was a lack of proper tracks in Belgium, so we went back to karting.”

Although both are motorsports, karting is very different from motocross. Nevertheless, both brothers loved racing on four wheels. "You have to be very precise; you drive close to the wall", Charly said, remembering what he liked about karting during his first time at JMK Karting. Markus: "And you're close to the ground, which increases the feeling of speed."

For years, the Glume brothers didn't get involved in karting beyond the occasional Sunday indoor driving. But watching a film about go-karting during the first year of Covid really got them going. Markus: "I wanted to race. But in 2020, we just trained. But then, in 2021, we participated in the last GK4 race of the season. That’s where we started racing in two-stroke karts."

So far, so good. They are getting good results, although their father Yorick still sees this as a learning season: "This is only their third year."

This season, Charly and Markus will race a lot to gain experience. In addition to the GK4 Kart Series, they are also competing in the Benelux Championship. At this even higher level, Markus won a race in Ostricourt and finished second and third on other occasions. Earlier this season they also raced in the Dutch Championship, where Charly finished a respectable third. Furthermore, they will also participate in two IAME Euro Series races.

Last year, the brothers scored well at the IWF championship in Portimão. If everything goes well, they’ll be participating at this year’s IWF as well. Markus: "That would be the best of all!"

Charly and Markus thank their parents, grandfather, Euro Karting, team members and team manager Lionel.
