FIA Karting World Championship in Brazil: a highly anticipated event
The enthusiasm shared by Brazilians for motor racing in all its forms for decades will be rewarded in 2021 by the organisation of an FIA Karting World Championship for the first time at the Speed Park International Karting Circuit in Birigüi, in the state of São Paulo.
The Speed Park International Karting Circuit has all the necessary infrastructure to host the FIA Karting World Championship - OK & Junior in Birigüi from 28th to 31st October 2021. This event is supported by the FIA's desire to broaden the horizon of international karting to continents other than Europe. Sporting and commercial considerations underpin this project, which is being advocated strongly by CIK-FIA President Felipe Massa. Brazil is looking forward to hosting the top competition in international karting and to showing the world its passion for the sport and its ability to organise such an event.
Willibald Zöttl, CIK-FIA Technical Inspector for the Circuit and Safety Commissions visited the Kartodromo Internacional Birigüi, the most modern, complete and safe karting track in Latin America on 9th and 10th April 2021. His mission was to ensure that the adjustments requested by the FIA had been made. Among the points analysed were safety clearances, trackside protection, the state of the surface, the logistics and safety of the "parc fermé", safety equipment and the facilities of the race control team.
"The Speed Park was designed to develop the practice of karting in the northwest region of São Paulo, as well as to host national and international events. We are delighted with the visit of CIK-FIA representative Willibald Zöttl. We are focusing all our efforts on preparation for the FIA Karting World Championship to make this event a great success!" said Ricardo Gracia, Speed Park Director.
In addition to the technical adjustments on the track, Speed Park is also responsible for the logistics of the competition including bringing all the equipment of the European teams to the event. An operational headquarters has already been established in Milan, Italy. In Birigüi, the event organisation has been entrusted to Octagon Brasil so that the world event can be a milestone in the history of karting in Brazil.
