Edgar switches to MP Motorsport for renewed FIA F3 assault

Jonny Edgar has signed with MP Motorsport for a renewed attempt at FIA Formula 3 glory. The 18-year-old from Workington in Cumbria aims to reap the benefit of experience in the Formula 1 feeder series by hooking up with the race-winning Dutch team.

Edgar got his first taste of MP’s F3 machine when he joined the Dutch squad for all three days of the recent post-season test at Jérez. Satisfied with the results, Edgar and the team decided to join forces for the 2023 FIA F3 season. At MP, the BRDC SuperStar will team up with Mari Boya, who was announced earlier as an MP F3 driver, and a yet to be announced third driver.

“I’m really happy to become part of the MP family for 2023”, said Edgar. “The team are proven race winners in FIA Formula 3, a fact that they have consistently showed over the past few seasons. It was great to get a headstart with the team at Jérez and meet up with Mari and all the guys. This year has been difficult with my health issues, but I have fought back and really worked on my fitness in the car. So now I’m relishing the thought of a fresh attack on FIA F3, as it feels like unfinished business to me. I can’t wait to get going!”

“We are truly pleased to welcome Jonny in our FIA F3 team”, said MP’s team principal Sander Dorsman. “He is an outstanding driver with loads of natural talent, his titles in karting and Formula 4 vouch for that. We look forward to having a hand in rebooting his promising career by providing him with a competitive F3 car. We enjoyed working with him at Jérez and aim to help him convert all of his obvious raw speed into strong results. Bring on 2023!”

In karts, Edgar was the 2017 European CIK-FIA champion at OK Junior level before he graduated to single-seaters with a debut season in Italian F4 in 2019. Switching to German F4 in 2020, the Briton romped to the title with six wins and 11 podiums while also grabbing fourth in his second year in the Italian F4 series despite only taking part in selected rounds. Edgar then progressed to two points-scoring seasons in FIA F3, in 2022 consistently finishing in the top-eight towards the end of the year.
