Double Grand Slam for Colapinto in Red Bull Ring

Bullet Athlete Franco Colapinto claimed two pole positions and controlled both races of Round 7 of the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine season at the Red Bull Ring, scoring two victories in the championship in dominant style.

The pace was there from the beginning of the race weekend. Franco topped the timesheets during testing, proving the hard work MP Motorsport has put into improving the car during the summer break.

Saturday started flawlessly, he was able to carry forward his pace into qualifying and scored his maiden pole position in the championship.

He comfortably led away from pole and controlled Race 1 from lights out, building a lead over championship runner-up Hadrian David. The 18-year-old from Buenos Aires didn’t put a foot wrong and stormed to a victory, his first win in single-seaters this season, and even posted the fastest lap of the race.

The racetrack nestled in the Austrian Alps welcomed the FRECA grid with a different view on Sunday, as the circuit was covered by fog and clouds, making the second qualifying session even more challenging. However, that didn’t seem to bother Franco, who repeated his timesheet topping performance with a last-minute flying lap, reserving the first slot on the 33-car grid once again.

The ROFGO Junior driver made a brilliant start, followed by a perfectly executed safety car restart just a couple of laps later, and even though he had to endure the pressure coming from championship leader Gregoire Saucy the entire race, Franco still managed to set the fastest lap once again, making it two ‘Grand Slams’ in two days. The Argentinian driver becomes the first driver to achieve this in the brief history of the FRECA.

Franco Colapinto: ‘’It was a perfect weekend. The car was fantastic, MP Motorsport did an amazing job, and we were able to show our real potential. It’s a great feeling to finally see the results that we have been working towards the entire season. This is just the beginning, and we aim to carry the momentum to Valencia, which is a track I love and have some great memories from. I’d like to thank MP Motorsport for providing me with a winning car, and Bullet Sports Management and ROFGO for the continuous support.”

Franco, who is running a double campaign this year, will be back in his G-Drive Racing LMP2 car this weekend (18-19 September) for the penultimate round of ELMS at Spa-Francorchamps.
