It’s been almost 30 years since planning began for the first Xtream Rock Island Grand Prix, the world’s largest and most prestigious karting street race. This will be the 28th year. The sport has changed a lot in that time and sometimes it’s hard to notice changes when you host one race a year. Rock Island organizers have taken a look at how they are doing and what might need to change. There are 2 major challenges and, in a sense, they go hand in hand: the racing needs to be safer; more support is needed from karters and sponsors due to growing costs to keep the event thriving.

African heat and thunderstorms in Adria at the beginning of the fourth round of the Italian ACI Karting Championship

Unstable weather characterized the eve of the fourth round of the Italian Karting Championship in Adria. The double finals for categories KZ2, 60 Mini, Iame X30, Rok on Sunday, July 28th. Live TV coverage on AutoMotoTV from 9.40 for race-1 and from 13.25 for race-2.

Following the two initial practice days and qualifying on Friday afternoon with track temperatures reaching 60 degrees Celsius, heats on Saturday, July 27th were run on better weather conditions until mid-afternoon when a thunderstorm made temperatures drop but made it tricky to continue with the race that was underway, the second heat of KZ2.

The temperature at this fourth round of the Italian Championship was mitigated also by the heavy rain fallen on Friday night, which challenged some of the structures set up by the conductors. Categories KZ2, 60 Mini, Iame X30 Junior and Senior, Rok Junior and Senior are the categories on track.

Palomba strong in KZ2, but the Finn Tonteri shining in the deluge

The performance of Giuseppe Palomba on Croc-Tm in KZ2 has been strong and he claimed the pole position before winning the first of the two qualifying heats. He led Leonardo Marseglia (BirelArt-Tm) and classification leader Simone Cunati (CRG-Tm) in the first one, while the rain started to fall at the start of the second heat and it soon turned into a violent thunderstorm that made the circuit impracticable. In this second heat, the Finn Paavo Tonteri (Tony Kart-Vortex) took the lead during the last lap and led Marseglia and Francesco Comanducci (Tony Kart-Tm) at the chequered flag, while Palomba slipped down to P4 in the closing laps after leading the race up to that point. Cunati was fifth, Davide De Marco (KR-Tm) sixth.

KZ2 standings after the heats: 1. Palomba; 2. Marseglia; 3. Tonteri; 4. Cunati; 5. Comanducci; 6. De Marco; 7. Zani; 8. Amati; 9. Tormen; 10. Nilsson.

In the third heat the victory went to the reigning champion Francesco Pulito (KR-Iame), while provisional classification leader Cristian Bertuca (BirelArt-Iame) was ninth in the first and 23rd in the second heat. Enzo Trulli (KR-Iame) was also among the quickest and claimed a third and a fifth place. The fastest in qualifying practice, Alessandro Cenedese (KR-Iame) had to settle for P4 and P6. Leonardo Caglioni (KR-Iame) claimed a great double win in Iame X30 Senior. He recovered a lot of ground on classification leader and pole-sitter Edoardo Ludovico Villa (TB Kart-Iame). Caglioni won both heats, while Villa's run was delayed in the first heat due to the contact with a rival, but managed to bounce back in the second one ending behind Caglioni.
