Robert Foster-Jones started his international season in fine style, when he won the Winter Cup at Lonato in February and he delivered an even better drive on the same circuit to win the 5th Bridgestone Cup last Sunday (26 October).
In a near-perfect weekend at the Italian circuit - located on the southern tip of Lake Garda - the 18-year old’s performance drew praise from his RFM team boss, Ricky Flynn, who said, “That was the best race Rob’s ever done. It was stunning – his most mature, calculating and cleverest drive yet.”
Having started from pole position, the Alonso/Vortex driver momentarily dropped to 4th place before moving up to 3rd. He took 2nd place and tracked the leader before, with two laps to go, making his decisive move.
Flynn added, “It was scary. His passing manoeuvre for the lead didn’t even cost him a tenth of a second. He was just so consistent. Other drivers lost time when they overtook one another but Rob didn’t - and that’s what won him the race.”
Foster-Jones is enjoying a stellar season that has already seen him win the Winter Cup (at Lonato in February), the British Open and Super 1 Championship and become the European Vice-Champion.
On top of the prize money (one of the biggest funds in European racing) and impressive trophy he received for his victory, Robert has also earned himself a test in a Formula BMW single-seater.
Before he can take up the opportunity, Rob returns to action this weekend in the new international competition, the Silver Cup. He says, “It’s a double-header competition that visits the La Conca circuit in Puglia (31 October/1 November) and Sarno (8/9 November), near Naples. A lot of the top teams and drivers will be there, so it’ll be tough. But my confidence is high and because they’ll be my last races in KF2 before I step up to KF1, it’d be great if I could bow out with top three finishes in both.”
Robert was further honoured when the organizers invited him to demonstrate the Terry Fullerton’s Jesolo-winning kart. It was Robert’s first experience of a classic 100cc kart and when asked to describe it he said, “Just one word – awesome!”
