It is becoming a (very good) habit: the entry list for the first event of the 2008 CIK-FIA European Superkart Championship is sold out, with 60 entered drivers of 10 different nationalities.
This season, the Championship will comprise three meetings composed of two races each. The first event will be held in France, at Nogaro, on 4-6 April 2008. The second leg is scheduled for 16-18 May in Germany within the framework of the prestigious DTM meeting on the Lausitzring. The third and final event will take place on 1-3 August at Assen in the Netherlands.
The reigning European Champion, Britain’s Gavin Bennett, will stake his title again and is expecting even more determined and honed opposition than in 2007. Last year’s vice-Champion, Malcolm Crowe, will be among his main interlocutors, and so will be the Englishman John Riley and the Frenchman Damien Payart, both former European Champions. Very fast last year, the German Peter Elkmann and the Brit Lee Harpham will be two further candidates for victory as well as for the title. On their home ground, France’s Benjamin Mahé, Mane Vignjévic and Emmanuel Vinualès could start their European campaign with a choice performance. One will also note that a former World Champion, Trevor Roberts from Britain, will be back in business (he was crowned in 1995 in the days when there was still a genuine World Championship for the Superkart category, then called “Formula E”); and we shall see the début of two new twin-cylinder engines recently approved by the CIK-FIA, the VM from the Czech Republic and the DEA from Italy.
In Nogaro, Friday 4 April will be dedicated to free practice (3 sessions). The two qualifying practice sessions will be held on Saturday 5 April, while Races 1 and 2 are scheduled for Sunday 6 April. The classifications of this first round of the CIK-FIA European Superkart Championship to be held at the Paul Armagnac circuit in Nogaro will be published live and during the event on the website of the CIK-FIA: www.cikfia.com.
