James Doherty sign for Protrain
Published by Bas Kaligis 5 november 2007 17:20 - Print | | Protrain Racing – a leading British and European Rotax team - has snapped up Junior Max front-runner James Doherty for the 2008 season. Team boss Gary Chapman says “I see James as one of the top ten in Britain and Europe right now. We hope we can turn him into a winner.”
The 15 year-old’s first season in the category was somewhat hampered after breaking his wrist at Wackersdorf (in the 2nd round of the Euro Max series) - but the teenager still managed to claim a seeded position by finishing 15th in the Super 1 points table, and helped the England team take a dominant win at the Internations meeting.
James is heading to Whilton Mill on 14 November for his first test with the team and to shakedown his new Gillard 010 chassis – he will make his Protrain debut at Shenington on 18 November.
He says “I can’t get over it. Protrain is a brilliant team and now I’m in it. The success they had this year and last with Jack (Hawksworth), Kazuki (Hiramine) and Luke (Varley) has made them one of the teams that everyone wants to drive for. I honestly cannot wait to start.”
Last year, Protrain won the European Junior Max championship with Jack Hawksworth and took victory in this year’s Super 1 championship with Luke Varley – again in the Junior Max category.
2008 will be James’ busiest in his career to date - “I’ll be doing a lot of testing and club racing prior to the start of the Super 1 championship and the Euro Max Challenge. I’m also hoping to do the Shakedown, Kart Masters and the O Plate and if I do well enough in the Euro Max series, go to the World Finals. This year has been tough - but with Protrain, I’m confident that I’ll be competing for wins”.
James added “I’d also like to say a big ‘Thankyou’ to all the people and companies who have helped me. Next year will be my busiest ever in karting and I hope I can reward their support with lots of wins.”
