Ollie Millroy has been offered a coveted BMW Scholarship, one of only four awarded this year, following a successful evaluation at the Formula BMW racing centre in Valencia two weeks ago.
The 17 year-old 2006 British ICA Super One kart champion went head to head with 20 other young hopefuls hoping to impress the judges battling to receive one of four EUR 75,000 scholarships into the new Formula BMW European Championship.
The scholarship previously consisted of around 48 drivers before being whittled down to just 21. As part of the evaluation, the youngsters got the chance to put the 140bhp FBMW racing car through its paces and right from the start, Ollie was on the pace, setting the quickest time overall.
As well as the financial backing provided by winning a scholarship, Ollie will also receive a very important place on BMW’s education and coaching programme, which will provide driver coaching, media and PR tuition and health and fitness advice.
"It’s awesome, I’m absolutely over the moon," said Ollie. "This is what I’ve been working towards, all the testing, all the fitness training and it looks like all the effort has paid off. It shows that the more you put into it the more you get out."
"The FBMW car is great to drive and I’m really enjoying it, now I can’t wait for the season to start."
The Formula BMW European Championship kicks off in April and supports no less than seven European rounds of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship, with two other events to be confirmed.
