Great racing at Rock Island Grand Prix + Results

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois -- Alan Rudolph won his fifth Superkarts! USA King of The Streets title and Gary Lawson’s two wins gave him the most career wins in the history of the Rock Island Grand Prix, the world’s largest karting street race.

But the biggest winner was Kyle Wiegand, whose combined second place finish in King of The Streets and victory in the ICC World Street Championship won him $4,650 and an Indy Pro Series test drive with SWE Racing.

Rudolph pocketed $4,000 and a free entry to the Superkarts! USA Supernats later this year in Las Vegas, Nevada. But he came up just short in what turned out to be a two-man battle for the test drive, finishing third in the ICC event just .355 of a second behind Wesley Boswell. Steve Eppard, CEO of SWE Racing, put the value of the test drive at about $12,500, putting Wiegand’s total weekend take at about $18,000.

But it wasn’t easy. After starting on the pole in ICC, Wiegand fell to the back at the start due to a gear a problem. By mid race he had fought his way back to third, took over second on lap 13 of the 20 lap race and took the lead with 5 laps remaining.

Meanwhile, Lawson used wins in 2-cycle Super Sportsman Medium and 4-cycle Senior Animal Heavy to push his career win total at Rock Island to 12 – one more than Margay teammate Jason Birdsell.

Presenting Sponsors of the Rock Island Grand Prix are AT&T, CJC Investments and Mazda. Jumer’s Casino Rock Island is the sponsor of the $32,000 purse and Kart Expo International presented by Sodi Kart is also a major race sponsor.

In other race action, Bermuda’s Scott “Skitchy” Barnes and Polish-born Voytek Burdzy pushed the number of wins by foreign-born drivers at Rock Island to six. Barnes won the 125cc moto shifter class and Burdzy won 125cc shifter Masters.

Rock Island also fielded the most star-studded field of the year in TAG Senior, with top drivers from Stars of Karting and the World Karting Association being joined by a number of top ICC drivers who jumped in for the weekend to make TAG Senior the largest class of the weekend with 57 entries. Former karting star Caleb Loniewski, who had been racing cars and came back to wrench for a friend when it got too expensive, was invited to drive at the last minute by Brian McHattie. His drive at The Rock was his first race in a kart this season and he had to hold off the stellar field led by Brandon Jones to gain the victory.

Michigan’s Scott Kleman won the Rumble At The Rock Animal Medium class and the $2,000 check that goes with it. Kleman was running third when the leaders tangled on the final lap.

Additional wins were posted by Travis DeVriendt in 4-cycle Heavy, Michael Dittmer in 2-cycle Super Sportsman Heavy, Brian McHattie won the TAG Masters race, Tony Neilson won in Yamaha Heavy and Michael Welsh won Yamaha Medium. Missouri’s Justin Jennings won the Tom Argy Junior Sportsman Yamaha class, named in memory of the former race director of the Rock Island Grand Prix.

“I’ve won five national titles and one national points race, but it’s awesome to win here. This race is one-of-a-kind. There isn’t any other event like it,” said Jennings.

This year’s winner’s purse in the Rumble at The Rock was increased to $2,000 through support from Briggs & Stratton. Superkarts! USA and the Rock Island Grand Prix increased winner’s share for King of the Streets to $4,000 and a SuperNats entry, and Snap-on Stars of Karting presented by the Indy Racing League and Bridgestone tires boosted the purse in the ICC World Street Championship to $4,000.

This year’s race also welcomed two guest announcers in TV personalities Derek Daly and Ken Stout. Both were in Rock Island with their sons who were racing, and each gave the large crowd a thrill by announcing one race. Both raved about they saw.

“I’m impressed that a karting event can be this big. It’s a credit to the people that put it together and the city for supporting it,” said Daly, a former Formula 1 driver and veteran of 20 years of broadcasting. Daly said karting isn’t seen on TV more often because the sport’s leaders don’t understand what it takes to be on TV. “The industry should use events like this as the flagship. Instead of making people go out to obscure places to watch the races, the racing is brought to the people. Karting needs to make more people aware of its significance. They need to pepper the year with more events like this one,” said Daly.
