Chiesa Corse started the first WSK Euro Series in Sarno in three classes; Nyck de Vries in KF1, Gary Carlton in KZ1 and Lance Stroll in KF3.
NYCK DE VRIES
KF1 After the qualifiers and a Superpole in which he finished in 6th place, the Dutchman closes the event with a double 5th place (in the first race he clocked the best lap time) in the heats before Final 1. He starts in 5th place and puts on a magnificent show before winning the race. Same result in the following heats, whilst in the last heat an incident damaged his frame: he is in 13th place. In Final 2 he starts in 5th place, drops to 13th place following yet another contact and then makes a great comeback in the rain, finishing in 5th place and, once again, clocking the best lap time.
The comment by Dino Chiesa
“It was the first race and we were also very interested to get an idea of how things were going: Nyck performed well on the track when it was both dry and wet. He is the man to beat, even if he is 2nd in the rankings due to the difference in scoring between Final 1 and 2. It is just a shame that in every race he, and many others, was forced to make a comeback from behind due to contacts on the track. The front runners are regularly bumped into on the first few bends. Perhaps it is time for the other drivers to start to be more professional in their attitude and not attempt to get in front by driving into their opponents and bumping them off the track, but because they are the fastest.”
GARY CARLTON - KZ1
Gary Carlton makes his debut in the Chiesa Corse colours. He clocks up the 18th fastest lap time in the qualifiers, finishing 9th in the first heat for Final 1, but forced to retire in heat two due to a technical problem. He starts in 28th place in Final 1 but an incident on the grid puts his out of the race immediately. In Final 2 he finishes 9th and 11th in the two heats, putting him in 15th place on the start grid. But Final 2 also ends with an incident that damaged the front of the kart, forcing him to retire.
The comment by Dino Chiesa
“A positive start, considering he hasn’t even been able to test drive with us due to a collarbone injury from which he recovered just a few days before the race. In short, we arrived in Sarno and just had enough time to see if the seat and the distance from the pedals were OK for him, and that’s about it. We must get to know each other and I’m sure things will improve.”
LANCE STROLL - KF3
He is in 36th place after the qualifiers, but shows he has the right pace in the heats: in the first he is 7th with the best lap time. Then he finishes 7th and 4th and, in the last two, 24th and 13th
following two contacts. He starts in 26th place in the pre-final, but retires after a contact. In the Final, he makes a good comeback from the back of the grid, finishing in 19th place.
The comment by Dino Chiesa
“He pays a bit for his inexperience, which is natural. For example, in the qualifiers, he clocked the 36th fastest lap time, because he focused on looking for a trail to follow, rather than on his time. If he had finished the pre-final race, I am sure he could have finished in the top 10. He has to endure those 2-3 glitches which help drivers mature on the track, but he is already very fast.”
